Yumika "P.RIOT" Parsley
background / biography
P.Riot is a producer, musician, composer, singer and songwriter. She came to New York in 1995 from Sapporo, Japan. Not really knowing anyone in town, she embarked on a solo journey to find what had initially propelled her to leave the native country.
She began learning classical piano at the age of three. Yearning for music that was less restrictive and disciplined, she moved on from her training in search for something that could express the burgeoning individual inside her. While she was in college, she was exposed to American Culture, specifically African American. One musician in particular whom inspired her to break away from Japanese musical norms was Stevie Wonder. Moved by his pure genius sound, she taught herself to play his songs on the piano. It was this that made her realize she too can impact the world with her own sound.
Setting her pursuits for New York City with pure determination, during 1996 to 2001 she performed at various places like CBGB, Nuyorican Poets Café and CB’s 313 Gallery with her band members. She released two solo albums between 1999 and 2001 independently as Yumika Parsley, which she produced and performed. During this time, her performances were documented and featured on a major Japanese network, which was also a music label. She was offered a record deal after the airing of the show’s first season, but was later withdrawn due to the cancellation of the show’s following season.
She wasted no time transforming herself from an artist to a producer in 2002, focusing on her production skills and equipping herself with the necessary knowledge and hardware she would need to excel in the field.
In 2007 she showcased her production in an iStandard Producer showcase and impressed judges Sickamore (Atlantic Records A&R), Omar Grant (EMI A&R) and Bruce Wayne. They all agreed she had what it takes to be the “next producer” and won the competition.
Later that year, each winner of the showcases compiled by iStandard competed for the title “Beast of the Beats” in which she was the only female producer among 40 others. The judges, Just Blaze, Riggs Morales (Shady Records A&R) and Lenny S. (Roc-A-Fella Records A&R), gave good feedback and voted her one of the top three overall in the competition.
In 2008 she scored a documentary for the hip-hop group The Wu-Tang Clan titled “Wu: The story of The Wu-Tang Clan” and was later aired on BET. She has also been licensing music for television networks such as The Speed Channel, Spike TV and MTV.
In June 2010 she was introduced to Mia Hunt, daughter to gospel singer Calvin Hunt. She immediately noticed Mia’s exceptional talent and was impressed by her writing skills. The two found musical chemistry and began recording, along with another producer she wanted on board. P.Riot is determined to be one of the best producers in the industry.
